About our cause
The Club was formed in 2015and came about as an educational forum for stroke Survivors and Carers who were getting little or no help from the Health Community following discharge from hospital.
. Its main aims today are to provide a service for ANY Stroke Survivors who feel isolated in the community.
The group provides Social, Practical and Emotional support as well as Physiotherapy from a dedicated Neurological Physiotherapist.
The Club is an independently funded group within the Stroke Association, and is self funding through Donations, Grants and Fund Raising.
The sessions are light hearted and fun for all the participants who look forward to these weekly sessions.
Club Members pay a small subscription to attend each WEEK, and this is kept deliberately small so that no one is excluded. However the weekly funds do not cover our weekly cots for the venue, Physiotherapist and Taxis for the less mobile members.
We therefore rely on Donations, Fund raising exploits , Raffles and boot fairs to bring in the rest of the capitol needed to run the club. We currently have 8 volunteers(Including the management committee) and 30 members. We are growing in numbers and have recruited 2 new members since the new year.
Our members are a mixture of very severely disabled, mentally and emotionally challenged. Most have no life or interests outside of the Club and therefore use it as a social lifeline.
tephen moved from Plymouth to Exmouth and saw a call in the local paper for someone to run the stroke survivors' club. He applied and got the role.
A Christian, Stephen supports people from all backgrounds, saying, "I've been there myself." He later mentions having had several strokes and TIAs.
The group first met at Exmouth Pavilion, then a council building, and now All Saints' Church, which also runs a Warm Welcome Space. "We felt people wanted it longer, so now they can return in the evening for entertainment like Elvis nights," he says.
Food donations from Tesco and M&S provide meals for club meetings and support the community. On Mondays and Wednesdays, they serve dinner and deliver food parcels for a small fee, waived for those in need. Members also check on others and offer advice, especially on energy costs.
Funding has been a challenge, but the club charges a yearly subscription and raises money through events like quizzes and gardening. Sport England even donated a table tennis table. They also teach cookery skills to stroke survivors and those on low incomes.
"I want people to feel looked after," says Stephen. The club has grown from six members to 75, offering warmth, food, friendship, and support. About 20 attend weekly, while others receive visits and shopping help. "We don’t judge—everyone is on the same journey to recovery."
