About us
South West Blood Bikes) is a volunteer led and run Blood Bike organisation, that provides a free out of hours emergency transportation service to the NHS across all areas of Devon. The service is mainly provided on motorbikes by advanced riders, with the support of some car drivers. South West Blood Bike’s main base is in Plymouth but has now grown to have additional volunteer bases in North, South & East Devon. South West Blood Bikes serves all 4 main hospitals in Devon along with outlying hospitals and hospices.
South West Blood Bike’s volunteers transport Whole Blood, Pathology and Microbiology Samples, Donor Breast Milk, Medical Records and X-Rays, Medical Equipment, Test Kits, and medications. The service will in fact transport any medically related item that is required urgently by a medical facility. These services are mainly provided from 1700hrs to 0700hrs weekdays and provide 24-hour cover during weekends and public holidays. However, due to recent demand, SWBB volunteers have recently agreed to transport some emergency items during day time hours.
The blood bike service is funded entirely by donations from the public, community groups, local businesses and some grants, along with volunteer fundraising. SWBB does not receive any funding from the NHS for the services it provides. Blood Bike charities across the United Kingdom save the NHS and Hospices they serve hundreds of thousands of £’s ever year, as if they were not providing this service, they would be forced to use expensive private couriers or even taxis to do the same job.
We need your help so we can continue to offer and even expand our service!
Thank you for your support and good luck!
